How to Care for Silver Jewellery: Cleaning, Storage and Tarnish

Good silver jewellery is made to be worn, not kept in a drawer. A few small habits will keep your pieces bright for years.

Why does silver tarnish?

Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, sweat, perfume and some foods. Over time this forms a thin dark layer on the surface – that's tarnish. Humidity speeds it up, which is why silver can darken faster during the monsoon. Tarnish isn't damage; it sits on the surface and can usually be removed.

Many ElleVesa pieces are plated (for example, our rose-gold-tone designs), which slows tarnishing a great deal. Plating needs gentle care, so the tips below matter even more for plated pieces.

Everyday care

  • Last on, first off. Put jewellery on after perfume, hairspray and make-up, and take it off before bathing, swimming, cleaning or the gym.
  • Wipe after wearing. A quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth removes sweat and oils before they cause tarnish.
  • Wear it often. Regular, gentle wear actually helps keep silver bright.

How to clean silver jewellery at home

  1. Mix a few drops of mild, unscented soap in lukewarm water.
  2. Dip the piece briefly and clean gently with a very soft brush or cloth, paying attention to settings.
  3. Rinse in clean water and dry completely with a soft cloth straight away.

For plated or stone-set pieces, keep soaking short and never scrub. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda pastes, silver dips and ultrasonic cleaners – they are abrasive or harsh and can strip plating or loosen stones.

How to store silver

  • Store each piece separately in its pouch or a small zip bag so pieces don't scratch each other.
  • Keep jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from bathrooms and direct sunlight.
  • A small silica gel sachet in your jewellery box helps absorb moisture.
  • Fasten chains and bracelets before storing so they don't tangle.

When to ask for help
